Sweets & Treats

Did you know that the best selling type of book is the cookbook? Guess what the second best selling book is? The diet book! Magazine covers are bombarding us with images of youth and fitness while enticing us with mouth watering images of triple chocolate mouse cake and fudge brownies supreme. It's no wonder we are caught between a rock and some tight pants (har har)!

We live in the day and age where self-care and pampering is getting more and more attention. But pampering ourselves with food causes more harm than good. When we use food to sooth, reward, punish (no cookie for you!), and motivate ourselves, we miss out on the great celebrations in our lives. Are you using sweets and treats to get you through the day?

Some thoughts...

What happened to birthday cake? We now have easy access Hostess cupcakes, twinkies, or some low-fat variety.
What about major holiday feasts? We have chicken roasts in the deli section or Boston Market down the street.
What about trick-or-treating? Halloween goodies assault up from every checkout line at the grocery store.
What about Thanksgiving? The grocery aisles have tastes and flavors to appease every craving. Gas stations have mini-marts with all our necessities.

When does it stop?

America is becoming (or already is really) the fattest nation in the world. So, I want you to ask yourself this.

Can you cut out some sweets and treats?
Do you really look at the food you put into your body?
Do you know why you eat?
Do you know what you are eating?
Is there a better way to handle your stress than eating?

Find a new way to appreciate, motivate, and reward yourself (and your children!!!). Save the sweets and treats for the holidays. Your body and mind will thank you!

Eat Clean

When was the last time you had a salad? Or ate some fresh fruit? How often do you enjoy a slow cooked meal (sans microwave)?

With all the information floating around about what to eat and what not to eat, it's easy to get very confused about the foods we should have at our table.

The simplest way to figure out what to eat is to pay attention to your body and what it's telling you. My stomach has a few things to say....

  • stop eating cookies for breakfast (but they are so yummy - and I'm house sitting, so there)
  • drink more water - who cares about how many glasses you "need" per day, just drink it
  • stay away from soda unless you like drinking chemicals
  • eat cleaner foods - the less it's prepared, the better
  • do NOT eat when you are NOT HUNGRY
  • I repeat, do NOT EAT when you are NOT HUNGRY (but I want to eat the cookie now. NOW!)
  • your craving will go away, but the queasy feeling you get after eating garbage (albeit tasty) will last for hours and hours
  • spending hours in the bathroom is only allowed for fixing your hair
  • pooping should not be an epic adventure filled with drama and pain with little reward
  • eat more beans and you will lower your heat bill (but may destroy your social life)
  • relax and let your body do the talking, it knows what's good for you
  • and finally... if it tastes bad, but is good for you, don't eat it. it tastes bad for a reason

Wow, my stomach had a lot to say. What is yours telling you? :)
